Book on tour - Love and Happiness

Title: Love and Happiness
Author: Ben Burgess Jr.
Genre: Contemporary Romance/African America Fiction
Published: April 24, 2015
Karen has it all: a handsome husband, beautiful twin daughters, a lovely home and a great job. Karen also has a secret; she’s cheating on her husband, with not one man, but two.
On the outside, her life seems perfect, but on the inside Karen feels neglected, bored and unappreciated. Yearning for affection and excitement, she falls into the arms of first Raheem and then Tyrell. Out of fear of losing her husband and breaking up her family, Karen ends the affairs but things don’t turn out how she planned. When Karen’s dirty secrets are revealed, she must fight to keep her family together.
Chris is doing all he can to hold his marriage together. He loves Karen, but she grows more distant every day. When she starts coming home later and later, he suspects she is being unfaithful. When Chris accidentally takes her cell phone what he finds changes their lives forever.
When tragedy strikes, Karen must decide if she should sacrifice her happiness for her husband’s love, and Chris wonders if he should stay with Karen because he still loves her despite her infidelity. But if they do stay together, will they ever find love and happiness again?
Sexy and relatable, insightful and inspiring, Love and Happiness shows us both sides of Chris and Karen's story and reminds us that sometimes to have it all, you must first lose it all.
“Yet another winner--Burgess delivers to us a well-written, beautifully crafted piece with both the man's and the woman's perspective.” ~Tamara (Amazon Review)
“Ben Burgess has done it again! Love and Happiness is a wonderful novel of a real marriage, with real people, who face real challenges.” ~Stacy Lawrence-Campbell (Amazon Review
“Truly unforgettable story. I felt Ben Burgess Jr. hit the nail on the head in showing both sides of this catastrophic yet delicate situation. I just couldn't put this book down.” ~Dee Cherry (Amazon Review)
When we got home, I decided to put all our bickering aside and make love to my husband. While Chris pleased me sexually, our busy work schedules had reduced our lovemaking to mundane quickies. I knew if I was bored, he must be too.
To spice things up, I’d read magazines, watched porn, and gathered tips from my friends. He loves lacy lingerie, so I wore my black bustier, black French-cut panties, and fishnet stockings. I lit scented candles and put on soft jazz to set the ambiance in the bedroom. Chris walked in.
“Damn!” he said.
He tugged on my lingerie to take it off. I couldn’t hide my smile. His hands hungrily roamed my body.
“Easy, baby. Enjoy what you’re looking at.”
I felt self-conscious as he groped me because his earlier comment about me looking chunky, kept replaying in my mind.
We made love. I used a lot of the new ideas I learned to spice things up, but he didn’t seem to notice. Chris always has the decency to make sure I cum, but again we ended up having another quickie because he had to wake up early the next morning. He rolled over on his side and went to sleep almost immediately after. I frowned, shook my head and stared at the ceiling. Was it me? Is this how marriage was supposed to be? Had we both gotten too comfortable?
I decided I’d start going to the gym and get a personal trainer. I hoped working with a trainer would change me enough that even Chris would have to say something positive about it. I didn’t imagine how much it would change me.

He is the proud father of his daughter Jaelynn and is active in trying to improve urban neighborhoods and communities.
My review

I love Ben's writing he reallys knows how to draw you into his character.

First I can describe Karen in just one word...BITCH!

Here is a woman who has a loving husband and beautiful children and all she can think about is herself. It's not like she put any effort into the relationship, or tried to make it better, no she made it worst! I felt bad for Chris and I could rant on and on about the book, but this is a book where you have to read to believe, it is definitely true to life, but sad at times.

IA: Initiate is origin story and a hero’s journey that follows thirteen-year-old orphan Naz Andersen and his nine-year-old sister, Meri. They live in a present day alternate Detroit/Chicago-like city known as the Exclave where they are surrounded by poverty, gang violence threatens every corner, and drug dealers rule the streets. Naz thinks he is ordinary except that he hears voices, has nightmares, and walks in his sleep.

The most important thing in the world to Naz is protecting Meri and getting her out of the Exclave and into the prestigious International Academy. But Naz has a secret, one that he is oblivious to, and only Meri knows. When Naz becomes the target of a notorious street gang he begins to discover the voices in his head, the nightmares, and sleepwalking are actually telekinesis and telepathy at play, a gift from his father of whom he has no memory.

EXCERPT

Present Day …

It is the city, a city that never dies although some of its inhabitants meet that fate daily. The city lives and breathes day and night, dark or light. In contrast to the city’s downtown with its skyscrapers, arenas, and casinos, the northern neighborhoods are like a sea of identical blocks attached to a grid of intersecting lines. Suburbanites pass through the city into its downtown then return to their perfect palaces. This image from high above suggests a pattern of order that is betrayed by the chaos found below where uncertainty is the only certainty and chaos the only order. This chaos is reverently referred to, with pride by its indigenous population as the Exclave.
Smoke and its accompanying aromas fill the hot humid air on this early, late summer morning. There is smoke from late night and early morning cooking, smoke from all manner of narcotics, and smoke from smoldering house fires set and put out through the night—although some are still ablaze.
And there are the sounds that set this scene: a dog barking relentlessly, sporadic gunfire, sirens in the distance, a train that passes through like clockwork, and a constant beat and rhythm coming from somewhere … everywhere … nowhere, that define the “silence” of the Exclave at dawn.
It is feared by those who are on the outside and rightly so. But it is home to those inside its invisible walls. Like a modern-day Troy, it is safe haven for some; however, for others, it is a place from which there is no escape. But there are a few that see bigger things and different places—other worlds.

My review
Children are the most precious gift that god can give us and the way that Naz and Meri’s guardian spoke to them in the beginning brought out the angry teenager in me and I just wanted to slap her silly. This story will bring a lot of emotion out in you and you will find yourself crying, angry, but mostly you will wish that you could pull these two young people out of the story and hug them until the pain washes away. Not saying they are not strong, they are, way stronger than I could ever be. Naz is an extraordinary young man, not only does he possess superpowers, but he also has a heart of gold. The relationship between his sister Meri and him is heartwarming. Even after all they have been through they still possess compassion, love and understanding. Oh and let’s forget the super powers. This was a very well written novel and one that should be read by all.
My rating: 5.0 out of 5.0

Romantic Comedy - The Makeover - Book Cover

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Revenge is a dish best served cold… while wearing heels.

April has just learned the real reason behind her boss’ impromptu dinner invitation. He only invited her to dinner with his colleagues to prove a point: that he can show up at an event with a plain Jane and still be considered ‘the man’. She expected better from him and had secretly hoped that one day their friendship would grow into something deeper. Now she knows she will always just be his 'nerdy secretary' to him.
But her two best friends won’t let her wallow in her pain. They convince her to give Dr. Stewart a dose of his own medicine. The plan: show up at the dinner looking irresistible and prove to her boss that even nerd girls can be sexy. But first she has to replace her unattractive business suits with something sexier and more revealing. It’s time for a makeover.
Dr. Chad Stewart would never ‘really’ date his secretary. She was too good, to pure for someone as jaded as himself. It didn’t matter that he was half in love with her. But when he needed an ‘average date’ for a dinner party she was the first person he turned to. He thought his secretary was the perfect choice until he arrived to find her looking like his wildest fantasy. But now she knows the real reason for his invite and he can see in her eyes how hurt she is.
Can Chad convince her to forgive him for hurting her or will she walk out of his life… taking his heart with her?

EXCERPT

“That’s right. Your plan was to use me to advance yourself.”
“That was my plan. I admit it. I was wrong. What can I do to make you forgive me?”
He sounded sincere. The fact that his eyes seemed to be watering as he stared at her longingly confirmed the sincerity she heard in his voice. But she wouldn’t fall for it. She wouldn’t let him in, only to be hurt by him again in the future.
“There is nothing I want from you. There is nothing I want you to do other than to take me home, right now.” Those blasted tears were threatening to fall again. “Please just take me home.” Her voice broke on the last word. Chad held his hands up, surrendering to her demand.
“If you really want to go home, I will take you home. Just please answer one question for me?’
She didn’t want to answer any questions, but if it would get her home sooner she would.
“What is the question?”
“When I touch you, do you feel anything?”
Where had that question come from?
“Um…”
“I’m not finished. When we sip coffee together each morning, do you ever get the feeling that maybe we’re meant to be together? I know it sounds crazy, but even tonight, with everything that is going on, does a part of you feel the need to hold me and never let me go?”
Yes, yes, yes, that was exactly how she felt. How did he know? A sob escaped her lips. She put her hands over her face. She didn’t want to look at him. She didn’t want to hope that maybe he really felt those things he’d just said. Hope led to disappointment and she’d had enough disappointment in her life already. She couldn’t risk placing her hope in Chad. He’d already let her down once.
The sound of gravel crunching let her know he was taking a step closer to her. She took a step back, suddenly very aware of his presence. Sobbing into her hands, afraid to look up, she continued to walk backward and he continued to follow her.
Her back connected with something hard. She leaned back and felt the rough touch of tree bark against her exposed shoulders. Chad wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her forward. His hand settled at the small of her back. He used his other hand to massage her shoulders. The feel of his hands on her bare skin made her tremble. Why did she want him so much?
“I messed up, April. If you give me another chance, I promise to never do anything like this again. Forgive me, please.”

EXCERPT

There he sat on a bench, outside the PECO Primate Reserve main entrance. When his dark brown eyes found me among the crowds, he smiled and stood up. My breathing got funny for a moment. Petro was a big man, even by hockey standards. While not as large as our former captain, our new forward stood three inches over six feet tall, and weighed roughly around two hundred and thirty pounds. He played center, and while he had good puck handling skills and some speed, he would never be Alain Lessard. His role was to supply grit, muscle, and the occasional goal. It seemed odd to me, a gal who had grown up with hockey, that he wasn`t a defensive player given his size and disposition. I had to wet my lips as I looked him over. No one wore jeans and a dress shirt like Petro Shevenko.
The plain blue shirt was loose, unbuttoned to the middle of his chest. Just enough to allow several curls of dark brown hair to peek from within, of course. The shirt sleeves were haphazardly rolled up showing off his thick forearms. His legs. God almighty, even cased in denim his legs made me moist. His thighs were thick, as most hockey players were, but they were perfectly proportioned to hold up his magnificent body. Long, muscular, strong, he walked toward me like a prowling tiger, one shoulder just slightly lower than the other, his scruffy hair blowing over his soulful brown eyes. Several women, including mothers with kids as well as zoo employees, paused just to watch this man strut his stuff. I ran my tongue over my lips again. My dress felt tight across my breasts. That familiar tingling sensation began between my thighs.
"Privet, blah, blah, blah." He said. Or, I think he said. I had learned that privet meant 'hello' in Russian. The rest? Not one damned clue. I signed hello to him, which is a salute of sorts. He took the hand that was coming down from my brow, lifted it to his lips, then placed his soft, pouty lips to my knuckles. And there we stood. Amid hundreds of people outside the primate center, his mouth resting on the back of my hand. I felt the faint tickle of his tongue touching my flesh. My body reacted with incredible wanton speed.

Excerpt is from Cria

“My father doesn’t believe we’re in danger.”

“I told you he doesn’t believe me.” He sighed. “Your father is too wrapped up in his own self-importance to see what is right in front of his eyes. He won’t accept us because he thinks our beliefs will weaken his tribe.” He reached out and brushed a stray hair from her face. “I promise you, what I told you is true. Our enemies are coming, and when they do, there will be war.”

Aleta closed her eyes. She was fighting the mating heat; he could feel it. Her arousal filled the air and increased his need. She leaned into him, whether consciously or subconsciously, he didn’t know. He wrapped his arms around her waist. His own mating heat flared up within him, making it difficult to think. It would be like this until her heat cycle was over. Who knew how long that would be?

Her eyes popped open, and she leaned back from his embrace. “You don’t understand. I had plans.”

He crooked his finger under her chin and lifted it to meet his gaze.

“Change them.”

Ecstasy Claimed (Guardians of the Realms, #2)Ecstasy Claimed by Setta Jay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Alyssa is tired of living under the hard hand of her parents and their overprotective ways. Also, being a mate to a man who hasn’t claimed her as really killed her self-esteem. She needs to reenergize, to take her life into her own hands, so she plans a trip with her friend Rain, to a place where she plans to lose her virginity.
Gregoire has waited many years to claim is mate. It’s not because he hasn’t craved her or wanted to take her, it’s because of his respect for his old friend, her father. But when his father calls for him, because Alyssa is missing, he comes to the rescue. He’s pissed off to learn that she has taken a vacation with her friend, to an island known for sexual romps and he realizes that the time has come for him to claim her.
Erik is having a difficult time dealing with the rape of his mate Sam. Sam is told by Sirena that in order for Erik to get over the hurt and pain, they have to mate. But Erik is afraid that he will be too much for his mortal mate, they he may lose control, so he chooses to leave Sam, to go to a place where he can wallow in his depression alone. But Sam won’t let him go, she knows what he needs and she intends on giving it to him.
I loved this story. Gregoire is a sexy man beast and I like how dominant, yet compassionate he is with Alyssa. I felt so bad for Erik and I couldn’t imagine, how difficult it was for him to know that the woman he cares for was taken against his will. Now I’m off to part three!!!!

“Don’t you need to go, Holly Jacobs?” Even the way he murmured my name was sexy. This was crazy. Add that to my track record of bad decisions and getting involved with Zack was dumb on an epic level. I was incapable of having a no-strings fling. For me, it was all or nothing, and this time I was going to make the sane decision.

“Why don’t you call me just Holly?” Asking him another question was harmless.

I saw a flash of white teeth in the darkness. “I like your name.” He sounded amused. “Is that okay, Just-Holly?”

Dear God. In the middle of his grief and distress, he still had a sense of humor. I really needed to escape before I found any more reasons to linger. But I didn’t move an inch.

“You sure you don’t want to come back to my place?” His whisper reverberated through me, turning my spine liquid and my knees to jelly. He shifted position slightly and I felt him trailing a hand up my back, the fingertips tiptoeing with excruciating slowness and precision.

“Zack, I don’t do one-night stands.”

“I’m here for two nights.”

THE CRUSTY-HEARTED MAN (Excerpt from Story No. 15 in Things from Other Worlds)

Outside our town, a few miles from where Jimbo’s gas station used to be, an old man lived all by himself. Everybody knew he was there, but nobody actually knew him. He’d show up a few times a year to buy canned goods at Ruth & Bobby’s, but that was it. Not a soul, not even the oldest soul in town, could remember a time when that man hadn’t been around. He must have been two hundred years old. Some said more like three hundred.
Truth was, he’d been out of touch with people for so long that nobody could remember his name.
He couldn’t even remember his own name. Folks said that a crust had grown over his heart.
The heart’s a funny organ, though. It’s tougher than you’d think, and can survive through pretty much anything. It’s like a tulip bulb. No matter how icy and long the winter is, that little bulb stays alive under the frozen ground until it’s time to shoot up a new sprout, green and full of life.
But for some especially frosty people, there’s rarely enough sunshine to wake up their hearts. It takes something spectacular, maybe even something from another world. I’ll tell you what happened to this old, old man, and you’ll see what I mean.
Nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. Flies and grubs and spiders occasionally tiptoed into the walls of his house, but most were never heard from again. The younger raccoons and rabbits only touched his front stoop on a dare because their parents warned them not to.
“Get away!” the old man would scream hoarsely while shaking a frying pan above his head.
Every living creature, from human on down to bedbug, knew enough to keep off the old man’s property. But that knowledge had not been broadcast across space. So, when an alien landed in a clearing in the woods one late winter afternoon, it didn’t realize what it was up against. It was scared and a little woozy after a rough landing, although it wasn’t afraid. It had been brought up to assume that all beings will do right by each other when given the chance. Poor little thing.
I bet you think an alien is a spindly sort that looks like it’s made of green plastic. Well, not this one. It was furry. Oh, so furry. Picture fur as thick as a polar bear’s and as soft as a mink’s. Now double how thick and soft it is. Now color it blue-green. This deep, soft, dark fur was all over its body, which was short and wide. The alien, standing, came up just past your knees, but was too wide to get your arms around.
It had two giant tangerine-orange toenails on each of its four feet. Its eyes, too, were the color of tangerines, but twice as big. They were very close together in its head, and surrounded by fur, giving it a very intense look. Your average human would probably describe this alien as “the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” and make a sound that went something like “Awwww.”
Well, this little alien was in need of shelter and food. It didn’t know the plants and animals of our planet, so it shuffled right by some perfectly edible berries and nuts. But it recognized a building when it saw one. And so it approached the old man’s house in the middle of the woods, with hope in its heart but nothing in its belly.
“MMMnnnyonggg,” it called out from the yard. Nothing stirred in the house, but several woodchucks and foxes gathered to watch from a safe distance. The alien trundled up the front steps. Once it caught its fur on the rotting wood, but freed itself like a real trooper. Inside the house, the old man heard a nasal howl.
“MMMnnnyonggg!”
He assumed it was a wolf or an injured bear. “Durn thing’s up on the porch,” said the crusty-hearted man as he pulled his frying pan down from its nail. “I’ll teach ╩╝em whose house this is.”
The old man shoved the front door open so hard it smacked against the rotten siding. A few shingles crumbled and fell. The woodland creatures watching the show skittered deeper into the shadows, fearing what would come next.
But the alien didn’t move. It didn’t know it was supposed to be afraid of the sound of wood smacking wood, or the sight of a two-legged earthling holding a round metal object. It assumed this was either a way to say “hello,” or else a communication device telling the whole planet about its arrival. Those were the only options that made sense to the alien. Widening its eyes and puffing up its fur, it tried to look as friendly as possible.
For his part, the old man was so puzzled that he forgot to swing the pan. “You’re not a bear,” he accused the blue-green furry thing. “You’re sure not a wolf. What are you? Gorilla?”
The alien didn’t know what the word “gorilla” meant, but it enjoyed the sound, so it waddled a little closer to the cool-talking human.
“GGgggrrrrill,” said the alien, trying to fit in.
The old man just snorted and slammed the door, leaving the alien alone on the porch.

Jaycie Wharry is one of gaming’s most infamous reviewers—under the intentionally vague pseudonym J-Dub. Most of her friends didn’t even know what she really did for a living. Then again, one in particular was missing a few solder points in his neural circuits, and she traded that life in as fast as she could when his infatuation with her translated into a threat to her safety. Her new roommate, Ethan, is just supposed to be a firewall against the past, but they’re heating up the wires faster than an X-box on a summer’s day.

When one of Ethan’s friends leaks Jaycie’s reviewing identity to the entire internet, accusing her of sleeping with developers in exchange for her 5-star approval, both of their careers are threatened. Since slapping a gag-order on the internet to protect their jobs, privacy, and safety isn’t an option, Jaycie and Ethan will need to archive all their preconceived notions, or watch their future—with each other and in general—crash in an unrecoverable way.

“Answer me completely honestly.”

“Like I’ve been doing all night?”

She raised her brows. Could he hear her heart hammering against her ribs? “Am I just a conquest, or are you actually interested in me?”

All traces of teasing dropped from his face, and he pulled her hand toward him. “You aren’t just anything, and definitely not a conquest. You’re fascinating and intelligent and witty and gorgeous, and ‘interested’ in you is such an understatement, it’s almost rude.”

She’d expected he’d probably come up with the right answer sooner rather than later. It was a leading question. What she hadn’t expected was such an immediate and passionate response.

He searched her face. “Was that it?”

“Yes.” She wasn’t sure she trusted herself to say more. “Your turn.”

“I desperately want to tangle my fingers in your hair, and kiss you again.”

Ethan’s voice had dropped an octave, and his gaze held her captive.

Heat flooded her, warming every inch of her skin, and searing her nerves. She pushed all thought aside, shifted her weight to her knees, leaned in, and brushed her lips over his. She pulled back enough to look him in the eye. “Truth.” Her voice barely reached her own ears.
